Alice Dyke: Andrew Gilligan has written an article in today’s evening standard warning of the danger of ‘Big Brother Britain’. Offering his support for the Convention, Andrew will be speaking during the Press Freedom session, something he feels keenly as linked to the ‘database state’. As he explains, ”if no communication is private, no confidential source will ever speak to a journalist again.”
Gilligan also offers an explanation for why middle England, despite traditionally having never been that bothered about ”civil liberties”, are increasingly showing their support for privacy: ”To attack it (privacy) is to assault the G-spot of Middle England.”
On terrorism he concludes the ’simple fact is some things are worse than terrorism’, and Big Brother Britain is one of them.
