A new civil liberties campaign is being launched in the European Parliament tomorrow by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe (ALDE). Graham Watson, the Lib Dem MEP who leads the ALDE grouping, will open the first Civil Liberties Day which will feature contributions from organisations across Member States. This from their website:
The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) is organising the first European Civil Liberties Day on April 15th in the European Parliament. We intend to launch a declaration constituting a European Civil Liberties Movement (ECLM) similar to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). While we have a lot of active NGOs and civil society groups in this particular field in EU Member States there is no existing platform at the European Level. We aim to gather at least 20 organisations working in different fields, e.g. freedom of speech, data protection, transparency, asylum, gender equality etc. to achieve this ambitious task.
You can check their (rather garish) campaign blog for updates.
