Tomorrow is the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Guardian have been running a very interesting series of articles to mark the date. Particularly good are AC Grayling’s daily blogs exploring in detail the articles of the Convention. Today’s blog discusses perhaps the most contentious area of the Declaration – the inclusion of economic, social and political rights.
Francesca Klug (who will be speaking on constitutional rights at the Convention ) is undoubtedly right when she says that the UDHR is just as relevant today as when it was first conceived. It’s sad but true that 60 years on from the Declaration the values it embodies are in desperate need of re-affirming. This is one of the things the Convention aims to do.
