By a majority of 19, English MPs voted against 42 days. Almost certainly if the national parliaments across the UK could have voted on the question they would all (including Stormont) have rejected a further extension of detention without trial. ID cards can be seen as an attempt to bind the devolved nations into an all-British ‘Union database’. So are British institutions a source of the danger and would national parliaments make us all freer? Or would they undermine the framework of universal, justiciable rights?
